Mamasa or mamase derives from the Mamasanese word meaning “love charm” or “lovely valley”. It was given by the local people as the name of a valley on the mountain area of the regency of Mamasa.
According to the local history, long ago when this valley was forest, many people came from outside to hunt and fish.
Mamasa regency altitudes between 600 m to 2000 m above sea level and the mountains in this area are 2500 to 3107 m above sea level. The Mamasa regency area is green and rain forested with natural water falls every where. These features make Mamasa an atractive destination for visitors (tourists).
Mamasanese still practise their traditional ancestral religion called “Ada’ Mappurondo or Aluk Tomatua” in the oral tradition passed from one generation to the next as the Mamasanese have no written script. Every year, the Ada’ Mappurondo followers still do their ceremonies, particularly after the rice harvest.
The noble corpse and reach one is still preserved on the house for a minimum of one year (between rice harvest). It also involves the ritual offering of some animals in those ceremonies.
In the former time, this area was also famous for its expert magician. The local people could order the dead bodies to walk home. They believed that all the dead bodies of a family or a clan should be in the same place in the life after, causing them to gather together their dead bodies into one place.
Typical Mamasanese houses and rice barns are similar in shape to a ship. The people believe that their ancestors came from the sea by ship/boat and travelled up the river.
Legend has it that “Nenek Torije’ne’ “: (the grandmother ancestor) came from sea and “Nenek Pongkapadang” (the grandfather ancestor) came from eastern, mountainous area of this island. They met each other in “Kapusaan” then moved to “Buntu Bulo village” in Tabulahan (near Mamuju regency). The people believe they are the ancestors of Mamasanese and surrounding.
